Another Sunday another radio show. And what fun we had! I'm back in the comfort of Galway, watching Battle Royale II and eating garlic cheese chips. I'm not sure which is more disgusting.

So as ever, four hours of tunes, all new (unless I play something a little older by mistake, or if a tune is just that good and I'd missed out first time round), apart from a little break half way through for covers, remixes, songs from films, that kinda business. Here we go!

N-E-W, plus Galway Arts Festival

Quick new music roundup before I go drop some phat beats ...as they say. Do they still say that?

Galway Arts Festival (12-25th July) lineup was announced in full last night. Music wise it's not the worst, but there's very little I'd pay €30 or whatever for. I'm sure a lot of people will be excited but personally I'm not over the moon. You can have a browse through the lineup here. The highlights would be Human League/Heaven 17 (although I only know one tune by each), Rodrigo Y Gabriela (definitely worth a look), Divine Comedy (again, worth a look but if I'm strapped for cash wouldn't be gutted to miss), Josh Ritter/Damo Dempsey/Cathy Davey (if I got a free ticket), Adrian Crowley, Breakestra (a new one for me, will definitely stick my head in) and finally Teenage Fanclub (again, a new-ish one but will have gotten though the back catalogue by the gig, I love what I've heard so far)

Of course I'm judging this years lineup on last years where Candi Staton, Booker T, Primal Scream, Bon Iver, Femi Kuti and shitloads more came up and apparently there'll be loads more gigs about the town that week anyway.

Anyway, new Teenage Fanclub album (Shadows) is out. I'm having a listen to it as we speak. Pretty tasty so far. This is a lovely song.

Teenage Fanclub - Dark Clouds Alt

In other music related business, one of my favourite bands about, Blitzen Trapper, are about to release a new album. It'll be called Destroyer Of The Void, set to be released June 8th. They'll be touring the U.S until mid August, tour dates on their myspace, so fingers crossed they'll be back in the Roisin or the Picnic at least. So for the moment have a listen and hang tight for the album, on first listen it's very 70's American rock, and in no way do I mean that as a bad thing. I can imagine chilling with a beer watching the sun go down down over the city to this one in the evening's over the summer.

Blitzen Trapper - Sadie Alt

Finally, I know sweet shit all about this band but going on what I've heard I dig em! Getting a tasty groove out of this tune at least.

What Cheer? Brigade - Malaguena Alt

Have a lovely evening wherever you may be and I'll be back tomorrow night after the radio show (4:50-8:50, i102104.ie, all new music) with the tracklist.

Disco gold!

I'm forever surprised by how good music can be. I've heard these songs before but just picked them out today, had a few listens and realised that they're bloody brilliant.

I can imagine these three will be popping up regularly wherever I may be DJing for the next few ...feck it, as long as I'm DJing I suppose

Enjoy!

The Meters - Hand Clapping Song Alt

Leroy Sibbles - Express Yourself Alt

Harry Belafonte - Jump In The Line (Surecut Kids Re-Edit Alt

N-E-W: RJD2

Hellooooooooo!! K, I said I'd be back Monday, but my head has been all over the shop after the party we put on last week. I'm gonna blog properly about it tomorrow. Suffice to say I've got the bug. I wanna book the best bands at the best venues and throw some awesome parties, and I wanna DJ to loads of crazy people. I wanna have fun.

On the blog front I'm gonna be introducing a new cast of characters soon, so more varied styles, more frequent posts, but all good, and all fun.

So a short one for today, I'm really digging RJD2's album The Colossus. It's gotten me happy.

Guest Post: Broken Social Scene at The Great Escape

So myself and a few great friends decided to inflict ourselves upon beautiful Brighton this weekend. For anyone who is a fan of fun, great music and beachside beers, then this is your spot. Especially if you make it over for The Great Escape Festival which calls itself Europe's leading festival for new music. I am unsure if I would say it's the 'leading' festival but it's definitely up there. Everyone was there from Groove Armada to Wild Beasts but the gig for me was Broken Social Scene.

This was on in The Corn Exchange which is an amazing venue in the heart of the Brighton. The gig made for easy and relaxing listening which reflected the whole vibe of the festival and Brighton in general. Like any perfect live performance though, they built it up nicely towards the end with their brass section. This Canadian band have anything from six to nineteen members and it really made for an exciting atmosphere when what seemed like a free for all would begin on stage. One minute there would be five to them , then all of a sudden there would be fifteen of them up there all doing there own thing! Somehow, they all make it work and it all came together very nicely. As there are so many of them contributing in this group, it makes for interesting listening as there are so many musical influences going on there as opposed to one overall sound. It means you don't want to miss what they will play next!

These guys are going to be at Oxegen and many other festivals and I would highly recommend catching them. I can only imagine what they would be like at an outdoor gig in the Summer sun.

While I cannot fault the variety of bands at The Great Escape, I would take issue with the fact that you will not necessarily get to see everyone you want to see. As a seasoned festival goer, I am aware this is usually the case but we just about made into Broken Social Scene despite the fact we were there early. There was not space for everyone. Another friend queued for Groove Armada for almost an hour and a half but to no avail. Also, you have the issue of legging it from gig to gig which is fine, but you would like to think you will get your moneys worth at the end of your sprint; Not a bouncer telling you that there's no room left at the inn!

You also cant help that smug feeling you have at a new music festival like that because you know you are seeing the big acts of tomorrow, pre-hype and at a good price. I would just advise folk to be aware they may not get to their chosen band as easily as they think. I would also maybe advise you not to to get so drunk that you lock yourself out of your hotel room as a good friend of mine who shall remain nameless did. You know you who are! I am still laughing about it. Not sure if she is!

TDOM: Day 17 - A song you often hear on the radio

A song that you hear on the radio often. Hmmm. Despite being on the radio I listen to it very little. I don't drive, I wake up too late to catch the all important breakfast radio and frankly I rarely hear anything I like on the radio. If I'm pottering about the house I might put on Lauren Laverne, (my friend Michelle has a lady crush on her and made me listen) she plays great tunes and lovely manner on air. I suppose, with working full time in radio for two years it's a bit of a reaction. Of course a bit of Paul McCloone in the evenings and sometimes Phantom FM, but I'm always out in the evenings so I miss out on radio. Of course there is a lot of great Irish radio but I won't be able to appreciate it properly til I settle down a bit.

So here goes, a song I often hear on the radio, that I really like. It was always a pleasure to hear when it came on. Back in the day in iRadio any time a celebration was in order this would be the anthem. Mark, Alan, Louise, Ferg and Shell, I reckon youse were generally responsible.

Hands in the air, up on the tables, epic faces on, good times!!

Then on the other hand, Mark Cunning (along with Alan Swan and Michelle O Grady), can take responsibility for me knowing shite like this!

Awesome though.

N-E-W: Faithless album, have a listen to the minimix!

Well well well, this is interesting. Faithless as a band are quite interesting. They wrote some of the biggest dance anthems of all time, and despite knowing that they could make album after album of massive trance-y bangers, radio hits and Ibiza classics, they continue to create whatever the fuck they want. Respect.

Now that's the in general stuff. This album. I've just picked up a copy. I'm about sit down to a listen. It's called The Dance. It's out now. They're playing at Oxegen.

But this morning I had a couple of listens to this ten minute megamix. It's fascinating, so I can't for the proper listen. But for a taster, there's trance, acid house, reggae beats, some classic Faithless chillout, all good it would seem, onward in that case!

Faithless - The Dance Minimix Alt

TDOM: Day 16 - A song you used to love but now hate

A song that you used to love but now hate.

I was back home in Tuam, where I'm from the other day, I came across an old spindle of C.D's. Y'know, most of it wasn't too bad, I just don't listen to Thin Lizzy and Rory Gallagher much any more.

I did listen to a lot of skate punk stuff. Over enthusiastic, jock rock political nonsense! That was farly balls alright.

TDOM: Day 15 - a song that describes you

Thirty days of music ...

A song that describes you? Heh heh

Thursday, May 13, 2010

TDOM: Day 14 - A song that no one would expect you to love

So 30 days of music, apart from a few days off last week, is going pretty good! Here's a re-cap:

day 01 – your favorite song
day 02 – your least favorite song
day 03 – a song that makes you happy
day 04 – a song that makes you sad
day 05 – a song that reminds you of someone
day 06 – a song that reminds of you of somewhere
day 07 – a song that reminds you of a certain event
day 08 – a song that you know all the words to
day 09 – a song that you can dance to
day 10 – a song that makes you fall asleep
day 11 – a song from your favorite band
day 12 – a song from a band you hate
day 13 – a song that is a guilty pleasure
day 14 – a song that no one would expect you to love
day 15 – a song that describes you
day 16 – a song that you used to love but now hate
day 17 – a song that you hear often on the radio
day 18 – a song that you wish you heard on the radio
day 19 – a song from your favorite album
day 20 – a song that you listen to when you’re angry
day 21 – a song that you listen to when you’re happy
day 22 – a song that you listen to when you’re sad
day 23 – a song that you want to play at your wedding
day 24 – a song that you want to play at your funeral
day 25 – a song that makes you laugh
day 26 – a song that you can play on an instrument
day 27 – a song that you wish you could play
day 28 – a song that makes you feel guilty
day 29 – a song from your childhood
day 30 – your favorite song at this time last year

So a song that no one would expect you to love. Not sure where to go with this. I go through phases of liking certain pop hits which would be at odds with my vehement and indeed militant indie ideals. I'm joking of course, just have a preference for stuff that ain't too sugarcoated. This however is the most sugarcoated, the most saccharin, and possibly, some would argue the most evil. For Mylie Cyrus is indeed the anti-christ herself, daughter of the dark lord of bad pony-tails and even worse country music. But sometimes you gotta throw taste clean out the window and jump about like a three year old who's just climbed out of a vat of Cola.

I mentioned that I liked this on facebook a while back and still get abuse over it. Fuck it, it's a party in the U.S.A.

TDOM: Day 13 - A song that's a guilty pleasure

I've a fair few guilty pleasure song but this one takes the win. Cheesy, bad 90's acid house, but quality for bopping about the house to before heading out. The Toots And The Maytals sample is cracking, the lyrics are ridiculous and the video is hilarious!

Live & N-E-W (Real Estate, Jogging & Kormac)

Quick locally kinda roundup.

If you're in Galway go see Real Estate tonight in Roisin Dubh. You'd be silly not to. Tickets are €10, but if you went to Dinosaur Jr. and Built To Spill last night you can get in free as long as you still have the ticket code. (Dino and Built were pretty good by the way, the crowd wasn't great, but everyone seemed really stoned so that could have been it. I suppose with Head Shops closing today everyone went wild with the auld fake hash). But yes, Real Estate, real good band, have a listen.

Real Estate - Fake Blues Alt

Yet another cracking release from Irish wunder-label The Richter Collective, home of Adebisi Shank, Not Square, Bats and loads more awesome bands. This time from Jogging. Their debut album is called Minutes. It's heavy and loud, but ultimately fulfilling to listen to. You can listen to the whole thing on their Bandcamp page before purchasing it in any format you wish for just €5. Also, they're playing June 17th in the Roisin Dubh, Galway, supported by the magnificent Nouveaunoise who'll be playing a gig upstairs after too. I'll be posting about them again once I get my hands on their debut album.

Jogging - Threadbare Alt

Another Irish release is from Kormac. This Dublin DJ has had Irish and international dancefloors hopping for the past few years, playing and touring with the likes Grandmaster Flash, DJ Yoda and Coldcut, sometimes as a DJ, other times with a full 11 piece swing band (aka, Kormac's Big Band) who use a mix of live turntables, samplers, drums, double bass, barbershop quartet, trumpet, clarinet, banjo and live visuals. He also hosts his own night, the Bakesale, that does exactly what it says on the tin. If you'd like to have Kormac down for a Bakesale e-mail darren@bodytonicmusic.com. Here's what goes down:

Awesome no? Always a good time. His debut album Word Play is out now and available through iTunes and Juno. It's an absolute cracker, definitely one of my favourite albums of the year, featuring some great guests, like Irish Hip-Hop heroes Messiah J and The Expert, Koaste, MC Little Tree and DJ Yoda, who he'll be touring with over the next while including a date in Galway on June 12th in Cuba. It's gonna be a belter.

Here's a taster:

Kormac - People Rising ft. MC Little Tree Alt

TDOM: Day 11 - A song from a band you hate

A song from a band that you hate.

Where to start. I hate a lot of bands. Ok, here goes, Dave Matthews Band. I just don't get it. They're fucking MASSIVE!! And that's why I don't like them. I came across a band a few weeks ago, a local band, they were atrociously bad. And their singer is a psychopath who threatened to break my teeth one night. But no one knows who they are, and no one ever will. So I don't hate them. I just don't care at all. But Dave Matthews Band. I don't get it! It seems to be a U.S thing. So so so bland.

Ok, hang on a sec, it just hit me. I hate Creed the most. Or maybe Nickleback. Oh oh oh, wait, click this: Is Nickleback The Worst Band In The World?.

Ok, I'm going to stick with Nickleback. Ultra emotional bands piss me off. There's no fun to them. Grown men mimicking silly teenage emotions with stupid hair, bland music, the ugliest guitars, just no style, no substance and no fun. Joy Division weren't much fun, but they made interesting, moving, groundbreaking music. If you're not going to be fun you'd wanna make some seriously good music.

Yup, that's it, most definitely the worst band in the world and of all time. Or maybe Kid Rock. Shit! I forgot about ALL Nu-Metal. And I'm not much a fan of country music. Fucking hell, I could totally start up a shit song/band of the day feature. But I won't. Although I heard a song on the radio today, some sort of autotuned R n' B tune about sending dirty pictures. Arse, there's way too much bad music in the world.

Fuck it. Here goes:

I've no more words.

Roundup, N-E-W: Blk Jks & Hypnotic Brass Ensemble and Tuamdance stuff

Ok! First proper listen to the new Dizzee Rascal tune, tis alright! I've been listening to a lot of Boney M recently as my girlfriend's gotten the greatest hits, this is very 70's disco, of course it's called Dirty Disco. Sweet.

Here it is, performed on Jonathan Ross.

Also on Ross's show, The Drums ...flamboyant upbeat Joy Division?

A song I meant to post yesterday is from South African band Blk Jks. It's brand new and is set to be on the album of the same name that's out June 8th, right before they take to the stage with the likes of Alicia Keys, Black Eyed Peas, John Legend, Shakira, Tinariwen, Vieux Farka Touré, and Vusi Mahlasela on June 10th for the launch of the World Cup in South Africa. They're last album, After Robots, last year, was cracking, so is this tune, big hopes for them!

Blk Jks - Zol! Alt

Choice Cuts, Dublin party people have added a track for free from Heritage, the new Hypnotic Brass Ensemble E.P that was recorded in Dublin last time they were about, it's an awesome take on Outkast's Spottieottiedopaliscious. Here are the details on Choice Cut's page

HBE are playing Sea Sessions in Bundoran, Co. Donegal June 25-27th, along with David Holmes, Paul Weller and loads more.

It's gonna be fucking silly.

TDOM: Day 11 - A song from your favourite band

A song from your favourite band.

Ok, I don't really have a favourite band. I haven't listened to enough music to make that decision. I'm not saying people can't have a favourite band, it's just I'm not sure yet. All I know is a really like the Clash. It's just solid energy. A wonderful, angry, well influenced pop band. If you get a chance read Redemption Song, Joe Strummer's biography.

TDOM: Day 10 - A song to fall asleep to

A song that makes you fall asleep? Anything by Stereophonics!! Heh heh ...

I rarely listen to music while falling asleep, haven't done for the past few years. Not sure why, I just stopped doing it. It was probably from listening to Nirvana's Nevermind as a teenagers, dosing off to Something In The Way ...,then, after 20 minutes of silence, the fucking hidden track kicks in! It's two minutes of noise!! So much for a lovely sleep after that.

It may seem a tad cliche'd but Radiohead are pretty good for napping to. This tune is a beaut.

TDOM: Day 9 - A Song You Can Dance To

I like this a lot. I could listen to it all day. It's splendid.

N-E-W: Chem Bros/Rollerskaters/Exodus

Ok, new stuff.

First off, new Chemical Brothers video. I got this from loudat, I mention this cos the accompanying piece is about how much of a twat his newly elected MP is. He added photos. The guy looks like a complete and utter pillock.

And here's the first single from their forthcoming (June 7th) release Further, it's a ten minute banger!

Chemical Brothers - Escape Velocity Alt

First listen to this band today, Rollerskaters. It's the solo track so far from some bedroom recordings a guy called Adam McKee has come out with. He was in a band called Young Friends too, if any of you are familiar with them? Check this tune out anyway and keep an eye for this band, if this guy can write this warm tasty pop gem then who knows, could be your new favourite band?!

Rollerskaters - Sleep Tight Alt

Finally, thrash metal legends Exodus have come up with a whopper of an album. While the metal giants of their time have gotten big and frankly shite and annoying, Exodus look set to blow the metal world out of the water with this banging album. Exhibit B: The Human Condition came out yesterday.

Exodus - Good Riddance Alt

The photo is of footballer David Beckham back when his stylist had him wearing metal shirts for a while. Flipping heck.

Coolio - Gangsta's Paradise Alt

TDOM: Day 7

A song that reminds you of a certain event.

The first major concert I went to was Metallica when I was 16. I'd been to see bands before but no one big. That night blew me away. The fucking size of the whole thing! Walking in with two friends, people smoking weed everywhere, loads of long haired, tattoo'd, pierced lunatics suffering through Lost Prophets, tolerating Slipknot, roaring through "It's A Long Way To The Top If You Wanna Rock n' Roll" by AC/DC over the P.A as we waited for the main event to kick off.

Then the opening. Ecstacy Of Gold by Ennio Morricone, which blended into Blackened. The backwards guitar notes. The screams of the crowd. The crush from all around me. Then James and co. wandering out on stage and blasting into three hours of mayhem. I was a pretty small kid at 16, I got destroyed but I loved every fucking minute of it. So ya, Blackened by Metallica from ...And Justice For All.

TDOM: Day 6: A Song That Reminds You Of Somewhere

I haven't blogged in a few days. It's been a mix of busy, holidays and trying to get my head around this crazy new IMRO charge on bloggers. Quick post now on 30 Days Of Music so, a song that reminds you of somewhere. Well this weekend was music-tastic. A few of us went to the Funk Ball 8 in Dingle. We heard everything from a drum n' bass mix of I Wanna Be Like You from The Jungle Book to an A Capella of Snoop's Drop It Like It's Hot over the 12" mix of Close To Me by The Cure and even a bit of Fraggle Rock. Awesome night. But for the win? Roaring the following song a good 15 times. Trip to Dingle: The best.

K, off to listen to new stuff from The Books and Ratatat. Wee post on the way later on.
