New Vampire Weekend Pt. 3

The first new Vampire Weekend tune we heard that would be on the new Album Contra was White Sky, pretty good but a weak live recoring, then the first single Horchata which was brilliant! A good live version of Cousins dropped the other day which was very exciting and then this morning I got my hands on the studio version, not a leak or anything it's out today. The quality's iTunes-ish so no radio/club play for it yet but that's cos I haven't gotten out of bed yet and bought the single in the music shop downstairs. For the moment, this is Cousins, from Contra which will be out January 12th

Vampire Weekend - Cousins (Link taken down at request of record label)

College radio

I started out my (still short but getting there) radio "career" on college radio in Galway in a lovely little thrown together station called Flirt fm. It was, and still is run my two paid staff and over 100 volunteers and you're guaranteed to hear some damn fine music no matter when you tune in. For a station run by amateurs it's gone some excellent broadcasting and is always worth a listen. Quite a few of Galway's top DJ's have shows at night on the themed evenings, Monday is rock and metal, Tuesday has Indie, Wednesday is Leftfield, Thursday is Electronic/Techno treats and Friday brings hip hop and soul, all underground, all well thought out by people who really give a shit about their music and most importantly all good.

I had a listen in this morning and despite fumbling with mics and some awkward silences the entertainment was still there and the playlisted music is the finest you're going to hear on the airwaves, put together every month by Paula Healy, station manager. I was on Flirt for just over a year, trying my hand at as many shows as I could, talking a shocking amount of nonsense and at least once going straight from a summer beach party to the breakfast show at 8a.m. All of the playlists are on the website (flirtfm.ie) and looking back over the playlists during my time there I got tad nostalgic.

Here are a few of the gems I would never have heard if I hadn't been in there (as a first year college student I was still hanging on to my RAWK!!! roots, going to Cuba nightclub for a fix of AC/DC, Rage Against The Machine and Foo Fighters) It was being exposed to a lot of this "indie" stuff that forced me to broaden my horizons.

Common ft. Lily Allen - Drivin' Me Wild

Battles - Atlas

Vampire Weekend - Bryn

And a few I played a lot of at the time for whatever reason

Alabama 3 - Mao Tse Tung Said (Radio K Edit)

King Missile - Jesus Was Way Cool

Messiah J And The Expert - When The Bull Gores The Matador

Playlist for Sunday November 15th

I got listenership figures for the show on Thursday, absolutely delighted, I can't belive that thousands of people would tune into a show on a Sunday evening that in reality is a complete mess! No features, no structure, just loads of music that you won't hear on Irish radio. So thanks to everyone for listening!

Lot to be said for ignoring Lady Gaga For three hours. Or completely. Just a thought.

Before I continue, I have bads news for anyone who hadn't heard. First off Baria Qureshi, guitarist and keyboard player with The XX (Weds 16th Dec in Roisin Dubh) has quit the band citing exhaustion, they will continue as a three piece.

And in much sadder news Jerry Fuchs, drummer with !!! and touring drummer with MSTRKRFT and LCD Soundsystem died last week after falling down an elevator shaft after a party. If you never heard !!! check them out. A fucking excellent band.

Wyclef Jean - Warrior's Anthem

Port O Brien's third album Threadbare is out now

Port O Brien - Oslo Campfire

Blak Roc is a new hip hop project from bluesey dudes Black Keys featuring Raekwon, RZA & (the late) Ol Dirty Bastard from Wu Tang Clan, Mos Def, Jim Jones and laods more big names. This is the first single, the album will be out Nov. 27th

Blak Roc - Hoochie Coo

This is a little Foals-ey for my liking, but it got me thinking about Foals, apparently they've just gone back into the studio to mix their second album and will choose which tracks to use based on crowd reaction at live gigs

Beat! Beat! Beat! - Fireworks

New Hot Chip! It's going to be on the album One Life Stand which is due out next February

Hot Chip - Take It In

I flipping love Frightened Rabbit, I reckon The Twist is one of the best tracks of the past 10 years. They'll be playin in Galway 4th and 5th of December, supporting Modest Mouse for Roisin Dubh presents ... in the Radisson Live Lounge. The Scots are set to release The Winter Of Mixed Drinks in March next year, for the moment this will serve as a taster to ...Mixed Drinks (!!)

Indie Christmas #2

Much like certain shopping centres, carbonated beverage companies and national postal services I'm thinking ahead this Christmas. Last year I put together an hour of Have Yourself An Indie Merry Christmas on the radio show. I want to go full three hours of funny takes on Christmas songs.

Here are a few of my favourites so far, I'll be on the look out for loads more over the next few weeks and I'd love some help, if you find anything drop me a link on the comments, on joshclarke@iradio.ie or on the facebook pages

Polyphonic Spree - Happy Christmas (War Is Over)

Twisted Sister - Oh Come All Ye Faithful

Thank you google.

Follow this link if you haven't already and download Girl Talk's Feed The Animals,

It's a spectacularly well thought out mess of some of the greatest and some of the worst songs of all time, it came out last year and I can guarantee it will make your day every few weeks. It's made mine as I sit feeling sorry for myself on the couch of a Saturday night. From Souljah Boy to Nirvana through Aphex Twin, Soul II Soul and hundreds of tracks you've never heard but it doesn't matter!

...because the bird is the word

The Trashmen - Surfin' Bird

Got DJ Yoda's How To Cut And paste The 80's, there was a snippit of this track in it and then I found it on Pitchforks top 500 songs of all time

The Primitives - Crash

Had a lovely evening yesterday. It involved this song

The Drifters - Up On The Roof

Originals!

Originals of covers ... if you know what I mean!

Didn't realise this was the original til today

Otis Redding - Respect

Northern Soul classic was given a dark 80's makeover by Soft Cell and later by Marilyn Manson

Gloria Jones - Tainted Love

For any Irish person over 18 this will bring back memories of Mark McCabe's Maniac 2000. Fun fact: The 4th biggest selling Irish single of all time!

Michael Sembello - Maniac

Sugababes covered this after it appeared on a Lynx ad. Fun fact: Ernie K. Doe went on to present radio shows on various new Orleans radio stations, frequently promoting his own music, wearing a cape and declaring himself "Emperor Of The Universe"

Ernie K. Doe - Here Come The Girls

I've decided I'd finally like to know what Battles were on about

The real lyrics for Battles - Atlas apparently

People won't be people when they hear this sound
That's been glowing in the dark at the edge of town
People won't be people, no
The people won't be people when they hear this sound
Won't you show me what begins at the edge of town

The singer is a crook
The singer is a crook
The singer is a crook
The singer is a crook
The kitchen is the cook
The scissors are the barbers
The singer is a crook
The chorus, full of actors*

Many MANY drunken nights dancing to this song trying to sing along! I suppose that was the fun of it, and god knows the next time this comes on in the pub I'll have forgotten the real lyrics and will be back to singing "people will be people when they eat this sandwich"

A few midweek bits and pieces...

Not a big dubstepper but I'm liking some of the remixes of modern indie tunes like this one!

Miike Snow - Black And Blue (Caspa Remix)

Flight Of The Conchords second album came out last week, this is a little Police-esque gem

Flight Of The Conchords - You Don't Have To Be A Prostitute

And this tune popped up in the hypem.com top 20 on Monday, funky as hell!

Captain Planet - Lagos Speedway

Enjoy!

p.s Captain Planet is a douche

Movember

November has started, which means for the silly amoung us, Movember has started. Yes, daft bastards all over the world have forgone giving money to hyperactive charity mugging pricks on the street in favour of growing a moustache, talking about it and demanding donations for mens charities. In Ireland we'll be raising money for prostate cancer.

Movember started up 5 years ago in a bar in Australia with 30 dudes growing a "mo" and raising money for charity. Since then it's spread worldwide, with €14 million being raised last year.

If you want to get involved sign up on movember.com and get growing! At the end of the month parties will be held with all of the dudes involved dressing up to match what their moustache has become, fun times while doing a good thing and looking ridiculous.

Nirvana - Mr. Moustache

Glen Hansard ... ROBBED!!!

Found a band called Brakes from Brighton today. I'd heard of them before and they've a new album out so I'd a listen to a few tracks. While listening to this little number Brakes - Heard About Your Band I thought, well that sounds rather familiar. Rather similar to this Am I being silly? Does anyone care? Glen has a fucking Oscar anyway.

Slayer - World Painted Blood out today

Slayer. The stuff of teenage nightmares are back with an album that could have been made in 1985 and that's no insult. For dudes in their late 40's to be playing this fast is incredible, for dudes who are married, have kids and are off the drugs this album is nothing short of miraculous! (Take note Metallica)

Admittedly, at the same time dudes in their late 40's still singing about serial killers, satan and war is a little juvenile but then again you've got to respect the Peter Pan Never Never Land fun of it all, plus they know that they'll probably fare better selling this to pissed off teenagers than accountants. No offence Dad.

Piss your neighbours off with these gems

Slayer - Unit

Slayer - Psychopathy Red

World Painted Blood is out today

Final Halloween Goodbye

I was at Electric Picnic in September, I was bopping along with little to do so a friend said we should check out Jaguar Skills, afterwards she was raving about it but I didn't see what the fuss was, there was far too much foghorn for me.

Earlier I was sent this link to his Halloween mix for Trevor Nelson's show on BBC Radio 1

Dude is getting a second chance from me, this mix kicks ass!

Jaguar Skills x Trevor Nelson Halloween Mix

As a final Halloween goodbye!

METAL!!!

I just googled "worst tattoo ever" ...this came up.

I do love metal, along with skateboarding it kind of defined my childhood, not this kind of metal, I liked Slayer, Metallica and Pantera.

Well that's what I told people.
